Worldmapper project released the gridded population cartograms. It is a serie of country maps created by using the same technique they invented for data mapping. There are some interesting country maps and it gives a very good idea about the urbanization in different places. I am not sure about the color picks, whether they have a special meaning. You may see the all the cartograms online.
